I bought a mustard ladle in a COTTAGE-type pattern with a mark I'd not seen before: "Y & T" preceding an eagle facing right with open wings on some sort of line or platform. The seller said the ladle was coin, but it feels like silverplate to me, although I couldn't see any wear. Does anyone recognize this mark? It isn't in Rainwater (that I could find) or listed in any of my sources. IP: Logged |

That mark sounds familiar Someone with a better memory will know it. In the meantime I'd search Yates. IP: Logged |

I have seen a few pieces with this mark, but have no identification to share. The pieces are indeed silverplate, but very difficult to tell from coin. The patterns are very similar to those produced in coin in the 1850s and 60s, and the Y&T pieces seem to have been very heavily plated, as it is hard to find one with any wear-through, even after 150 years. The stiffness does give them away, though. Brent IP: Logged |

A picture of the piece would help as then we could identify the pattern. Davis and Diebel do not list a Y & T maker. This may be a wholesaler, jobber or retailer. A picture would really help. IP: Logged |

Turner does not list a Y&T mark. Nor does Unitt. Turner has a Yale & Curtis, NYC before 1880. And a Yale & Sons in England. This exhausts every serious study of silverplate marks, in a book at least, done in the last 80 years. My suggestion at this point would be to begin looking at pewterer marks as many early platers were pewterers who tried out the new technology. Most did not continue with it, but did have some small production. From a picture, we can maybe tie your ladle to a known pattern and maker. Then conclude that Y&T is a jobber etc. IP: Logged |

I finally found the pattern in Davis & Deibel, 2nd ed., page 653. It's labelled TUSCAN, 1852, and, according to them, was made by Redfield & Rice as well as 1847 Rogers Bros. Hopefully Brent will be able to post a picture of my ladle with the Y&T mark. A pie knife in this very same pattern was on eBay years ago, and the seller said that it was marked "coin," although no picture of the mark was shown. IP: Logged |

Here's an earlier thread that doesn't answer the current question but may shed a little more light on the subject: Need assistance in ID'ing maker of "Y" & "T" IP: Logged |

I wonder if this could be a side business of Yale & Towle, the lock makers? In the 1860s/1870s they expanded manufacturing to include a variety of plated goods. IP: Logged |

Trefid asked me to post this pictture of the thread-starter. Coincidentally, I have a matching sauce ladle at home. Brent IP: Logged |

Yes, I've seen that mark around here in central NY, but have never researched it or seen it IDed. Not sure if I have any examples, but I'll keep it in mind next time I'm going through things.... IP: Logged |
