[26-0926] I would like to identify the maker and if possible, the age of an old silver tray. I've been researching hallmarks on the Internet, but none come close to matching the markings on the tray. Hopefully the picture helps - it shows the markings. I appreciate any info you may have. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Welcome to the forums. It always helps frame a better answer if a new member explains some about themselves & why they want to know. IP: Logged |

I'm researching a tray that's been in our family for quite some time. The markings are a crown with an X, a shield with the initials HS, and a profile of a lion (looks like Britannia). Inside a triangle are the words "silver on copper". There are no other markings/numbers. The closest I could find was the Hartford Sterling Co., Philadelphia. I have a friend with a similar tray, same markings. Maybe this posting will help others who have tried unsuccessfully to identify their pieces of silver. Appreciate your help in identifying the maker and age of this family heirloom, which we think is at least 50 years. Thank you.

Was anyone ever able to ID this mark?

Not sure about this, but two of the marks look similar to marks used by the Hartford Sterling Company.

You have a nice copper tray with silver plating. I do not know the maker but I have seen the marking before and I think it may be an American manufacturer. Hopefully someone here may know this particular company's marking. Markings on silver plated objects are entirely up to the manufacturer's imagination and creativity as to what they think will help it sell and they have not been cataloged to the degree that those made of silver have been. Your thought that it is at least 50 years old sounds about right as it appears to be somewhere in the mid-20th century. IP: Logged |
