[26-1579]

I just bought a set of silverplate flatware that I like but have no idea where it's from or who made it.

It has MHU on the back. it also has a symbol that looks maybe like a bird? with a K in it.

Could someone tell me anything about it or where I could research.

Can I suggest you read the "Please Read Before You Post" section at the top of the page? It points out among other things that
a small personal introduction is appreciated. To give useful help we really need to see an image of the flatware and of any marks on it. Those help "place" the items by style, making it much easier to consider where and when they were made. We do look forward to being able to help you, but you will have to help us too. best of luck.

Thank you for the response.

My name is Anita and I live near Asheville, NC.

I have recently become more interested in the older silver and silverplate flatware. Just think it's beautiful and can't understand why anyone would use stainless when silver is available and is so inexpensive.

I saw this set online and bought it. I'm not familiar with the MHU letters. Started trying to research on the internet and bumped into this site!

Sorry, I don't have a way to do the pictures.

The Hallmarks above are different than the ones on my flatware. It just ocurred to me that the pictures of the flatware are still up on ebay although the item was sold. Is it ok to include the link so someone out there can take a look? I didn't see anything in the guidelines that says not to include a link just for looking at something but I don't want to do anything that's offensive.

Hi anach, welcome to the forum. Generally we discourage linking to commercial sites. What you could do is right click the picture, save it to your pictues then upload it to one of the free picture hosting places. Then just link to that. This way the picture stays up for a much longer time.

MNU is frequently Soviet era Russian silver. The corresponding letters in our alphabet are MN'tz'. The last one is a uniquely Russian letter that sounds like 'tz', the title 'Czar' begins with it. In Soviet era acronyms, it usually is 'tzentralni' meaning 'central' or 'principle'.

Some of this is very nicely done, some is not. When well made, the silver is very satisfying. A picture would help a lot in identifying. Some of the Soviet patterns were traditional ones from the 19th century.

Thanks for the pictures.

This is a pattern I have encountered. It generally is in good condition. As to age, no clue. My guess is that it has been made for a long time. That is one of the Russian marks, Soviet era. It may be still used.

Do you have pics of any of your other finds?

Hello!

Welcome to the Forums.

This may be the company you are looking for.

Joint-stock company Trade house "Kolchug-Mizar". They use the bird & a K for their mark as Scott has shown in one of his photo's. Perhaps they have used variations of this over the years. They are the largest manufacturer in Russia of cutlery and tableware of sterling silver, German Silver and others alloys with various kinds of protective-and-decorative coatings - gilding, silvering, chromium plating, nickel plating.

Sorry I can't come up with the pattern just now, nor can I tell you what exactly what metal it is made of.

Hope this helps.

Wow, that's way more than I knew this morning! I really appreciate the information.

Sorry but I have never really found anything else that interesting to someone who knows silver, just vintage or antique flatware that I think is gorgeous. However now I'm more excited and think I'll watch more for different and more interesting sets.

Also I'm thrilled to find this page and plan to keep up with it to learn more.

Thanks again!

Hi Again!

You never know what interests someone. What one of us may like others may not, But we all like to learn, (at least I do). Perhaps something that we may have not cared for in the past we may have a better appreciation for down the road. I might compare it to food tastes, or music, or whatever. Something you may have hated as a child for example now has become your favorite. As we grow older so does (hopefully), our tastes of a wide variety of things.

Expanding our interests is what makes life interesting. We here of course, do love silver of all kinds.

Show us your items, we'd love to see what interests you.

Enjoy the day!
