I can not find the trademarks on a silverplate covered butter dish with glass insert of my mother's in any of my sources - Rainwater, Jackson, Kovel, Ensko, or any of Wyler's works - or on the Internet. Of course they may be in Rainwater but these old eyes can't spot them. They may be pseudo-marks???

The dish measures 7½” x 4¼” and stands 3½" to top of handle. The rim, cover's border, and handle are gadroon with leaf/flower corners. The bottom of the glass insert has a cut-glass star burst design.

The trademarks consist of 3 stamps: crown in an octagon, lion rampant facing left not in a cartouche, and a knight's helmet facing left in a shield. Stamped with "1701" which is probably the pattern number.

Does anyone have an idea as to maker?

TIA.

Butter dishes of this type were sold from the 1920's onward. The pattern is called 'Gadroon' with some varient name attached. They date from when butter ceased to be sold in balls and started in sticks.

The makers are difficult to identify as frequently they were sold by glass companies. The trick with them is to identify the glass. And from there the maker, if knowable. All glass butter dishes were unsatisfactory: the changes in temperature tended to cause breakage. So, the glass companies used silver plated tops and bottoms to house the glass butter dish. This began in the 1920's.

The thought of it being trademarks of the glass maker hadn't crossed my mind! I did suspect it wasn't old like definite post 1900. As it was a late item it was bothersome not spotting the trademarks somewhere. Now the possibility of glass maker marks is a relief that ALZH hasn't completely taken over.

Thank you, Dale!
