[01-2183] I acquired a souvenir spoon from the 1901 Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, NY. It was made the US Silver Company. Does anyone have information on the dates this company was in business? Also, how can I tell if the spoon is silver or silver plate? Can I safely conclude the spoon was made in 1901 or were souvenir spoons made for some years after the event?

Hi Tom, The US Silver CO. was founded in 1948. I'm not quite sure but at each new exhibition they also have produced spoons showing older exhibitions. The US Silver co was minimum working until 1986 (my book dates from that time and it says that they are still working). Have a good evening and Happy weekend Marion IP: Logged |

Marion, et. al, You are right about United States Silver Co., but it turns out they are not the ones who made my spoon. I could not figure out why a company would make a souvenir spoon for an event forty some years before. I checked the Encylopedia of American Silver Manufacturers and learned that the label "U.S. Silver Co." (as opposed to United States Silver Co.) was used briefly by Oneida. Their sales began to increase after they introduced a pattern at the 1901 Pan American Exposition. All of this suggests that my spoon was made for the fair in 1901. I still cannot tell if it silver or silver plate though. It has an odd patina with a gold tint to it. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, IP: Logged |

Usually Oneida is silverplate; sterling only came into their line after WWI. The gold tint may indicate an underlying metal with a brass or bronze like color. IP: Logged |
