[01-1241] Has anyone ever come across markings that consist of a square indent with the letter "P", a second square indent with the letter "S" and a third square indent with the letters "Co", followed by a four digit number. I have a good close up pic available if you would like to see exactly what I am describing. Thank you!

This is apparently a trademark of the Poole Silver Co. of Taunton, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1893, and was purchased by Towle in 1971. Poole made mainly silverplate and pewter, with a limited amount of sterling. Your piece is plated. The mark is probably on of their earlier ones, perhaps 1900-1920. I hope this helps! The Wallingford Historical Society verified for me the mark P.S.CO. was the Preisner Silver Company, Wallingford Connecticut. They went out of business 20 years ago. The founder's son still has a Jewelry store in Wallingford. (as of 3 years ago). Anybody in Wallingford provide a 2nd verification? I realize there is a Internet Web Site saying it's the mark of Poole Silver Cmpany, Taunton Mass. I advised the Web master 2x's with no reply and no change to their information and apparently no investigation was undertaken. I collect Poole Silver Company (Lancaster Rose pattern) and have never seen the P.S.CO. on Poole Silver pieces or in the Poole Silver catalogs. Preisner apparently made only sterling pieces. Poole made very few sterling pieces and they are marked with the single name Poole (in script) and the word sterling. IP: Logged |

Very interesting. I got the attribution of the mark straight from Rainwater, and I would imagine that the internet site you refer to did as well. Rainwater is usually reliable, but nothing is perfect. The Preisner attribution may well be correct; I'd love to see more evidence. I would be surprised, though, if the pot in question were sterling.
