[26-1877] Does anyone have information on or pieces by the Taunton Silverplate Company? Rainwater lists the company as being in business between 1853-1859, but pieces I have seen online have been "dated" as late as 1900. Also, in Rainwater the mark shown for Taunton is in error. The mark shown reads, "Toronto S.P. Company" unless there is some connection not evident to me? Thanks. IP: Logged |

I have never looked into the company deeply, but have some notes on the engraver George Wood that may pertain. He worked for the firm for five years, 1871-1875, when they closed their factory. He then worked three years for Meridian Britannia, but left to assume the foremanship of the engraving room of Steen, Son, & Hall of New York City, who had bought up the name, factory, and assets of Taunton Silver Plate. And from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle, 16 December 1874:
Will sell at auction, AT THEIR SALESROOM, NO. 4 MAIDEN LANE, DAILY, UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, At 10 o'clock. A. M. THEIR ENTIRE STOCK ELEGANT SILVER PLATED WARE; TABLE CUTLERY. &c. Per order of TAUNTON SILVER PLATE COMPANY, JOHN H. SWAIN. Treasurer. IP: Logged |

Perhaps you have the 5th edition of Rainwater? Thumbed through it when it came out and decided to stick to my 4th edition. She shows a another listing after Taunton Silverplate Company for the Taunton Silver Plate Co. with proper pictures of the mark. Text states, "This firm may be some form of continuation or re-organization of the previous one. The date of its founding is not known. In 1872 Oliver Ames served as president and George T. Atwood as treasurer, according to the New York City Directory. The Taunton Silver Plate Co. sub-leased a portion of the Redfield & Rice showroom at 4 Maiden Lane, New York, in that year. the following year, after the Redfield & Rice bankruptcy, the Taunton Silver Plate Company took over the entire showroom area. John H. Swain replaced George T. Atwood as treasurer of the company. Not followed in detail beyond 1874. At some point, probably circa 1880, the firm was purchased by I.J. Steane." The marks shown in the book are noted as being from the 1870s. ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

Hear that the 5th has some newer marks in it, but seemed a bad sign that it went down to 288 pages from 418 in the 4th. ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

There is nothing that I can find in the Directories concerning Taunton Silver Plate Co in 1870. There is more than one mention of the company in 1871. John H Swain remained as treasurer and agent for the company through at least 1878. IP: Logged |

Davis and Diebel show two patterns of flatware for Taunton. They found one patent from 1877. My impression is that this was a mark that sort of floated around for a long time. Meaning it was used by several makers to move seconds etc. Rainwater's fourth edition was made with the assistance of Judy Redfield. She is a lovely person and a long time collector and scholar of Redfield and Rice. I probably met her for the first time over 30 years ago. Her shop used to be called Museumscope. Was there any explanation of why the auction was ordered? This seems unusual without a really pressing reason. IP: Logged |
