Recently acquired this toast rack (sold as being made by Davenport & Bray) and have been trying to figure out what the "X" means in this mark. I know different letters were used to indicate quality of plating, but can't find any reference to an X. Any info appreciated.

I am tempted to say it is there simply to mark the spot.
On the other have it my well be an indication of the depth of the silver plate. American companies had various marks to indicate the amount of silver that was used and I imagine the English did also. It could also have been used in some quality control program to indicate who made it or that it passed inspection.
Regardless of its meaning it is a very nice toast rack.
