I've seen a lot of silver coin spoons in the last period. My question is why and when are the two symbols of a eagle and a five pointed star used/stamped on several spoons in America? From-until, and why not at all spoons or flatware? In a other topic considering a kind of eagle, that was stamped into a English spoon, I was wondering if for instance the eagle symbol is used as a international sign and with which purpose? With the search function there were 200 reactions about coin silver (objects, marks) so it should be nice to get a short reaction about the question, thanks from my side! IP: Logged |

A star and eagle mark search of the forum has some good information if you haven't already tried that. [This message has been edited by bascall (edited 07-17-2008).] IP: Logged |

Thanks a lot Bascall it helped! I found one topic about a five pointed star question. The answer was that four large factories used these symbols. W.M. Rogers, Simpson, Major, Hall& Miller named by the book info of Rainwater. So that helps a lot! The time they used these symbols was from around 1825 until 1976. Perhaps there were also little factories which used these symbols but were not so popular as the four big factories mentioned by Rainwater. I still wonder the way of starting symbols which confirm any information of the stamped silver object. The country which started with it and perhaps by moving silversmiths to another country(or oversea) they brought also the symbols as new mark(s)with them. But what I understand (a little) there must be a agreement made by government(or so) to use new symbols. Also checked by assay offices etc. But it is just to much information(and not totally understood) at this side, so question(s) will come from my side sometimes. Greetings Silverhunter. IP: Logged |

In many countries there are few or no laws at all about the use of markings on silver. For example in the U.S. a smith can use any markings they like and change them as often as they like without needing permission from the government or anyone. The only restriction is that a company can not use the exact same trademark as another company. If you were to come to the U.S. today, or if you had come 100 years ago, you could use a star or an eagle or a windmill (like van Erp) or a lion rampant or whatever you marks you thought looked good, and then you could change your marks every day without asking permission from anyone if you wanted to.
