Hello,

I'm mostly interested in European silver pre 1850. One reason for my interest in silver is that it has stamps which makes it possible to track where it comes from and who made it. It's the detective work that I love. Some times I don't find what I'm looking for and these times I will post here so - hopefully - someone can help me out.

I recently bought two candle holders from a big auction house in Sweden. They where listed as "European, 19th Century, unclear hallmarks".

Actually, the stamps where not bad at all. It's obviously a crowned letter "L" for Lisbon. On one of the candle holders, the stamp is from late 1804 and on the other from 1805. They are also made by different masters. One is marked CIS or maybe CLS, the other IIR.

I would be very grateful if someone could help me identify the masters. Photos attached:

[Why are you researching this?

Hi kbn023.

The first thing you need to do is follow the guidelines in the yellow box above. Among other things they ask every new member here to:

quote:
Please introduce yourself
• Tell everyone about yourself, your interests in silver,
• And why you are posting.

We're not being snoopy; knowing will help us help you and to welcome you to our small community.

On the why you are posting part, are inquiring because you are planning to sell the object at some point in the forseeable future or are you a collector of silver and simply want to learn more?

On your photos, in addition to making sure they are no more than 640 pixels wide and are not links that send people to other websites, it really is important to have not only the closeups of the markings, but also overall photos from a couple of angles since markings can (and sometimes are) be added after the fact to pieces of silver.

We look forward to your participation with us on this great forum.

Very buatiful pair. These Empire style candles could be from a number of countries.
The term "unclear hallmarks" Means that they not identified, not nessasary that they are unclear.

I would guess that they are german. (Northern germany)
I have not found a Danish match, Swedish they are not, so I would go a bit South to germany. But a guess.

I'm 100 % sure they are Portuguese. The marks are not that unclear and I've found some identical pairs on a Portugese auction site.

I asked a Portuguese auction house and got the answer!

CIS is Camilo José dos Santos (1770-1822) and IIR is Joaquim José Rodrigues (1792-1826).
