I was curious about this cross I picked up today. I thought it was silverplate, but when I cleaned it a bit I noticed an insect mark and 925. Any thoughts? Thank you, Janet IP: Logged |

Hi and welcome to the forum, Janet! The best way to get a good response is to follow the forum guidelines which ask for new folks here to please briefly introduce themselves to the others here by mentioning their areas of interest in silver and what they are trying to learn about their piece of silver. To give you a start on a response the .925 marking means that your cross is made of a metal alloy that contains 92.5 percent silver which is another name for sterling silver. best regards, Kimo, Contributing Editor IP: Logged |

Thank you Kimo, I have posted a few things so far and have done introduction. I have been looking and found some similar crucifixes labeled as Spanish. I was curious about the mark, and possible date. Perhaps it's a fleur de lis, not an insect. Thank you for confirming it should be Sterling. I picked this up in a thrift store, so I'm very encouraged to keep looking! IP: Logged |

Ooops, sorry. The .925 is definitely the percentage of silver in the alloy - 925 parts out of 1,000 or 92.5 percent which is the same as sterling. The insect touch mark I do not recognize though I hope someone here will. My guess is that it could be a maker's marking. As for the country, I agree that the overall style of the cross has a feel of Spain or perhaps Mexico or even Portugal? I will look forward to hearing from someone who knows for sure. IP: Logged |

I've been looking around and found a Spanish silversmith co. Called Pasgorcy, which had an ant hallmark. Would anyone have any information or a picture of their mark? Thank you, Janet IP: Logged |

Thank you Scott, I'm still trying to get cleaned up (waiting for Hermans shipment) but I don't see a star anywhere. Back to the drawing board, but thank you so much for those images! Janet IP: Logged |
