In going thru the archives the other day I noticed someone had asked for the patent information for Gorham, 'Buttercup.' This process is of great interest to me since Designers, Patent Dates and possibly other historical information seems to be available. In the literature that I've come across on patterns information, many listings do not give the designer's name. How do I go about searching Patents to discover historical information on particular sterling patterns? The information you shared on 'Buttercup' was amazing. Can someone walk me thru the search criteria including site designations to start the inquiry and what pieces of information I should have to make a successful search and where to insert them in the overall process? The prospect of this availability brings me more happiness than anything has in a very long time. I appreciate all of your help and your willingness to share your wisdom and knowledge with others. I too am willing to share anything I may know to assist other members in their pursuit of data. I have always imagined that if I were to sell part of my collection that I would want to offer the buyer as much information as possible so that they too could begin to enjoy knowing the love and devotion designers of this art form have considered when they pursued the development of a new pattern. Thanks again. Best wishes to all of you and your families as we reflect on our individual blessings received in the past and through the upcoming Christmas Season. Thanks again in advance for your thoughtful assistance. Bob Michaels, Rexburg, Idaho. IP: Logged |

From Pure Coin The Manufacture of American Silver Flatware 1800-1860 an article by Deborah Dependahl and Waters is a good place to start your reading about American coin silver. She has several paragraphs on early utility patents on the making of spoons. Some early design patents are shown here. The author notes that the first design patent for spoons was No. 26 issued on Dec. 4th 1844 to a Michael Gibney. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 12-02-2018).] IP: Logged |

Try Google Patent Search: https://www.google.com/advanced_patent_search You will probably want to choose "Design" in the pulldown menu for "patent design/status." They have instructions: IP: Logged |

For older patents, sometimes you just have to guess a date and go through the patents chronologically. The US Patent Office website search engine: https://www.uspto.gov/patents-application-process/search-patents IP: Logged |

Patents related to the design of flatware are assigned to Class D07 entitled Equipment for Preparing or serving Food or Drink not elsewhere specified. I think subclass 642 to 664 would have many of the design patents of interest. Remember Design patents are not as interesting to review as utility patents as a design patent is simply a drawing of the ornamental design and discloses little in addition to what one can see by looking at the object.
