I have a set of silver that is probably from Germany, 1800's. There are no hallmarks apart from a castle with 3 turrets and the initials B & G in block letters. The knives have 750 on the handles and there is one crescent that is reversed to the German hallmark crescent, but no other marks. Can you help me with the identification of the maker and origin of this set? Thanks!

Not German but Danish.

The hallmark of 3 towers is a city mark for Copenhagen, Denmark. Usually there is also a date punched (ex: '14' for 1914) in the bottom of the tower mark as well.

Also, B&G is for Bing & Grondahl, a well-known maker (still in business) of porcelain and other table items.

FYI: Imperial German silver hallmark is a crescent moon (face to the right) with a crown and (topped with a) cross and usually accompanied with '800'' for the content.

Hi there,

I am quite sure they are german not danish. A castle with 3 turrets is also the townmark of Hamburg and B&G is a famous Jeweller est. in 1743 named Brahms&Gutruf.
The crescent on the knife handles and the 750 which indicates the fineness in thousands are punchmarks used by a famous silversmith in Dresden/ Saxony.
Hope I could help you,
Bert (Germany) smile

The German crescent mark did not come into effect until 1888, and several German cities used a three tower hallmark prior to that time. The German and Danish three tower marks differ somewhat in style and shape.
