I bought this spoon in Bergen, Norway. The maker's mark appears to be that of Thorvald Marthinson of Tonsberg. The 830 S indicates the silver content, and "NM" stands for Norsk Monster (Sorry, I can't insert the correct Norwegian letter for the "o", and I don't exactly know the meaning or significance of this mark). There is the letter "N" in a square punch, which I am assuming is a date letter, followed by the number 220 (a patent number?).

Can anyone help me clarify the meaning of the marks and date this piece?

Thanks,
Tom

Well, "Norske Monstre" means "Norway Made", essentially, and the solitary N is not a date letter: it appears on the works of several 20th century Norwegian makers and indicates (if I remember correctly) that the maker was the member of some sort of gold & silverware manufacturer's consortium.

This pattern is called "Viking Rose", and the pattern number is 220. It was one of Marthinsen's most popular, though they no longer make it. I don't know when or by whom it was designed, but the mark you show looks early to mid-20th century to me; certainly that's when this pattern was made in great quantity.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Blackstone. That information corresponds with what the dealer told me: first quarter of the 20th century and no longer made. As usual, you added a great deal more.
