Gebrüder Hepp was founded in 1863 by brothers Otto & Carl. Carl, a chemist, was instrumental in the development of the metal alloy "Alpacca" - also known as "German Silver" - and developed a process to plate the alpacca with a thick coating of fine silver. Gebr. Hepp were large suppliers to hotels, restaurants and cruise ships. The factory passed through several hands in the teens and 20s, finally being destroyed during WWII and not rebuilt until 1952 by then owner Harry Frank. It was sold in 1988 to WMF [Wurttembergische Metalwarenfabrik], but again destroyed by a fire in 1990. It was once again rebuilt in Birkenfeld in 2001. They are still in business. The “90” is a designation of silver plate quality, usually indicating the total amount of silver in a specified number of pieces - generally one dozen each of table spoons and forks (24 total) - would contain 90 grams of pure silver.
