Hi,
does anyone know what the silver standard is in Vietnam? I can't seem to find any information anywhere about Vietnamese silver and Vietnamese silver hallmarks. Thanks for any help.

Tardy does not list a silver standard mark for Vietnam. You don’t say why you are looking for this information. I’ve seen silver handicrafts from Vietnam for about 10 years. All of these items have been made for the export market and all have been silver plated. Some of the flatware serving pieces are quite attractive and eye-catching as they are often combined with shell. Quality is variable. It is my understanding that the craftsmen are originally from the northern hill tribes which have a long tradition of making silver jewelry worn with their native costumes. Personally I’d be wary of any claims that an object from Vietnam is sterling silver grade. Hope this helps.

My mother has in her collection, a lidded double salt or condiment holder with a pierced design showing trees, huts, bridges, etc., with matching spoons and celluloid liners. It is fairly crudely made, and I have always had doubts about the quality of the metal, but it is marked "SAIGON ARGENT"; would guess that it dates to somewhere in the 1920s-30s during the French Indochina period. She has another single covered salt that is very similar in design with a matching spoon and milk glass liner, much finer in quality, but unfortunately unmarked.

Hi there,

I had at one time in the mid 1980's (and still may have) a group of oriental spoons with "84" marks on them as well as "Siagon", and figured they were made sometime after the Americans left.

Let us know what it is that you have found and we all would be happy to help.

Thank you to everyone who has helped. I was considering purchasing a tea set marked "Vietnam D900" with a makers name. Also there is another mark which looks like a star and the number 875. However the set has irridescent tarnish like plate, and even seems to have areas where the base metal may be coming through. Also it is very lightweight. I was confused because the marks seem to indicate a high silver content, but an inspection of the set indicates plate. Everyone who replied has been very helpful, and I am happy to have found a site where I can talk to others who love silver as much as me!

Every time I travel to the less developed countries of Asia I always view the markings on any silver there (and every other collectable from watches to antiques to you name it) to be questionable until proven true. The amount of counterfeited goods of every description in these countries swamps the legitimate goods in these countries. There is little the governments can do to control it and so it is rampant to put it mildly. There are certainly some authentic things made to high standards, but the percentage of this is tiny compared to the made-to-deceive trash.
