Has anyone any idea of these silver marks on an art deco gilt silver French Compact.

The makers mark looks like a dogs head over PMA.

Many thanks
Wendy

Wendy,

Very nice. It is actually a wild boar's head used to mark small items of silver from 1838 to 1961. The diamond lozenge contains the maker's mark, which is too small to see in your photo. I think the finesse of the silver is 800, but I am not totally sure on that.

Regards,
Tom

Best wishes

Very pretty compact. Sorry I can't help identify the maker, but your picture looks blurry on my monitor. The compact should be marked on all sections, so you might find a clearer mark elsewhere on the piece. I have found that French compacts often are marked on the inside bottom half, underneath the powder pan, or on the top half behind the mirror. However you might not want to dismantle it just to get the maker!
