[26-1946] Dear members, I have a nice antique wick trimmer with German hallmarks. I'm puzzling with the hallmark of the animal with the letter E. It does not look like Berlin. Can anyone tell me something about about the maker. My guess is that the trimmer was made in the late 18th c. Many thanks in advance. IP: Logged |

My impression is that the letter is an F rather than an E. The lower part of what might be seen an an E seems to me more likely to be the arm of the bear rather than a part of the letter. It does look like the Berlin bear of the late 18th century in Tardy, except of course the letter is on the opposite side of the bear from what Tardy shows. IP: Logged |

Hi Soumo and all, It has been a long time since I posted here, so I hope I will not act in disregard of the rules of the forum. Your candle snuffer/wick trimmer is made by Cornelius Ewalt Landgraff, born in Bergen, Norway, master in Berlin 1738-?. The snuffer is assay marked with the bear with the letter E in front/to the left and Scheffler has found this mark on items dated 1776-1777. The assay master (Zeichenmeister) is unknown. It has also an appropriate diet mark or tremulierstrich. The "FW"-mark is a Prussian tax mark in 1809 for older items. Hope this helps.
