Hi all I have this little vase that has a marking that is a diamond shape with the letters CPO in the center of it. Does anyone know who this company is? did they do silver? This vase was painted black but after cleaning it looks gold underneath. I can't find a forum about brass or bronze and surly it isn't gold it is far to heavy can someone direct me to one? Thanks for helping in advance I have searched and searched the internet and have found nothing. I have been given great advise and assistance here before and am hoping your knowledge will help me yet again. Christina IP: Logged |

Was your vase actually painted black, or was it silverplate on brass or copper alloy with a layer of varnish to try to slow the tarnishing process? This forum is a place to discuss silverplate, but as you will see there is just not much information on markings other than those from well known companies. Perhaps someone will recognize the company that made your vase, but I do not. IP: Logged |

Hello Cristina, I'm sure CPO is a Japanese company. I have a heavy brass vase made by them. It is etched in the Japanese style with flowers and a very wise looking bird. They did make silver also. I have seen pieces marked with their hallmark and 950 which is the Japanese sterling standard. I hope this is of some help--sorry I can't tell you more. IP: Logged |

C.P.O. is the manufacture's mark. The silver pieces I've seen with this were also marked with either "TOYOKOKI" or "MIYATA". Both of which are large jewelry stores in Japan. Yes, I have no doubt that C.P.O. pieces were sold in the PX (Army Post Exchange store), the PX has everything! But, it does not stand for Central Purchasing Office. I will say that I've read that on ebay so often, that sometimes I belive it! IP: Logged |

Far too heavy for gold? I don't understand what that could possibly mean! Far too light for gold would make more sense. In any case if there is a question, I recommend a density check. This could be a "Maltese Falcon" of a vase. [This message has been edited by salmoned (edited 02-09-2006).] IP: Logged |

I took the 'far too heavy for gold' reference as being to the 'weight' -- thickness, that is -- of construction, rather than to the actual weight of the piece. Solid gold pieces are of course often lightweight in construction, even in overall actual weight, compared to plated or brass pieces, just to save money on the raw material. Of course there is also the opposite extreme, where a gold piece is made as chunky as possible just to impress with it's owner's wealth.... IP: Logged |
