I have recently aquired a piece of old Russian cloisonned silver. To look at it I don't think it's been cleaned since the day it was first sold (pre revolution) How can I safely clean the enamel and silver without damaging or loosening either? Dipping the whole thing in Silver Dip does not seem to be an option - I want to differentiate between patina and long term dirt accumulation. Any advice would help. Graham IP: Logged |

The best results in cleaning Russian enamel Cloisonné is: 1.) Clean with a toothbrush, dishwasher lotion and warm water all the dirt and grease 2.) Take a toothpick, silverpolish cream and clean the mostly heavy oxydized gaps in the composition until the gilding shows 3.) Rins with tilecleaner and the help of the toothbrush (now the gilding is shining!) 4.) Dry with cotton and enjoy If you like patina (whatever this is in the opinion of some collectors) - never touch it and let it stay like it is - ugly and uncared! Sazikov 2000 IP: Logged |

Sazikov - again many thanks for the information given although the use of tile cleaner terrifies me. I will certainly follow your advice. When speaking of patina I was referring to silver and the darkening effect of age on the untouched areas of silver combined with the high shine of prominent areas. Thanks again Graham IP: Logged |

I know, tile cleaner sounds brutal - but there is a mild acid in it (citrus or vinegar) which make the gold shine without polishing. Polishing with some silver polish will destroy the more or less thin gilding. Gold (gilding) is acid resistant and you will only wipe off the oxydation layer. Try it, it works perfect!
