[26-1116] I own two candelabras with unfamiliar hallmarks. Both have under the base a hallmarks of a standing animal with a letter K and a letter A. Also there is an inscription which is rather vague: Haml.. & Sohn ? I guess this is German. Could anyone tell me the material, date letter and perhaps maker of the candelabras? Many thanks in advance. IP: Logged |

The animal is the standing bear of Berlin, 19th century as indicated by the K, according to Tardy. Haml. and Sohn (son)would be the maker. I am not sure what the letter A stands for, but I am sure that Blackstone and/or Sazikov will have more information. Also, could you post a picture of the whole item? We'd like to see it! Beginning in 1818, the Berlin guild used a dual assay system. The primary assayer’s mark appeared alongside the Berlin bear: here, “K”, for primary assayer J. C. S. Kessner, working 1818-1854. The secondary assayers mark appeared alone; here, “A”, for secondary assayer B. G. F. Andreack, working 1818-1842. (Note that “K”=Kessner and “A”=Andreack is pure coincidence; both assayer’s letters progressed alphabetically. Andreack was succeeded by Ch. F. Deppe, who used the letter “B”, 1842-1847.) So the narrowest time frame for your piece, based on the marks, would be 1818-1842. A photo might help narrow this further based on stylistic grounds. The maker is Humbert & Sohn: Jean Georges Humbert & his son Georges Humbert (1802-1863). The firm was in existence by 1799, and received the warrant as Royal Jeweler in 1825, renewed in 1838. They were one of Berlin’s finest 19th century firms. As for silver content, unless marked otherwise, the assayer's marks guaranteed the Berlin minimum fineness of 12 Löt (.750) silver, which I presume your candlesticks to be. Hope this helps! I'm amazed by the swift responses and detailed information. Many thanks. I have made some photos as requested and perhaps a date can be given when these candelabras where made. Thanks in advance IP: Logged |
