I have a Wiener Werkstette cup holder(I think) and saucer.

There are numerous marks that I can not decode on the bottom of each. There is also an engraved "R".

and

.

I would appreciate any info on these objects. Did they come with inserts, about when they were made, and what the various marks mean?

Based on the excellent first message I received I have added 3 images that better show the marks on each zarf. They are not the same on all zarfs. The mark "KT" appears only on one. Each saucer has the same set of marks.

Wow . . . very nice. It's a teaglass holder - called a "zarf" (no kidding) - and yes, it is missing the glass, but it looks genuine to me. I'd need a much better photo to fully identify the marks, but I can say that the designer is unquestionably Carl Otto Czescha (1878-1960), that it dates from around 1910 and was executed (probably) by Werkstätte master silversmith Josef Hossfeld (whose mark I think I see there).

More, please!

Has "zarf" become the accepted name for cup holders with removable liners, like the Russian style tea glasses and the American sterling demitasse holders with Lenox liners? A general term would be useful. Have only heard zarf in reference to the small Turkish coffee cup holders with the porcelain liners (finjans), though many years ago worked for a retired Marine who called the little plastic Solo coffee cups with the conical liners zarfs. One of those words that makes me smile.

Thanks for the great infomation. I have added some better pictues of the "marks". Hopefully you can decode them. One certainly implies Josef Hossfeld. I wonder who KT is?

In my experience, yes. For some years I have seen the term used specifically with the Russian cup holders, and the first time I ran across it was in association with American examples. So at least in the Middle Atlantic, Northeast, and Great Lakes areas it seems to have such use.

An identical tea glass holder is shown in Waltraud Neuwirth: Wiener Werstaette Schutzmarken.I. registered trademarks,Vienna 1985, page 185, the marks are also the same, pictured on page 184: silversmith Josef Hossfeld, design Carl Otto Czeschka, and the monogram KT in a circle is stated as that of an unidentified silversmith.

Upon magnified examination of the marks I have discovered the small hexagonal mark, that is best viewed in the forth image includes a "Diana head" with a number 2 to the left and the letter A to the right. Research indicates that the 2 specifies a fineness of 900/1000 and the A specifies that the Zarfs were made in Vienna.

Do these always come with saucers? I've been seeing many of them lately in a local antique shop that acquires estates from New York state, but have yet to see a saucer among the bunch.
