[26-1368]

greetings!

Hoping to find info about the 4 hallmarks on this tray (photos below) measuring 22" wide. I cannot ID the 2nd mark and the 4th mark (lion).

Also, I assume it is German-made by the moon?
But which mark would be the the makers mark?

Marks are:
1) crescent moon facing right,
2) unknown mark that looks like a mushroom biggrin ,
3) 830S (for 830 silver),
4) a lion standing facing left.

The second mark looks to be the crown mark that goes with the crescent moon, just a little worn. The lion would be the maker's mark, but I don't know anything about German maker's marks.

I love your tray, by the way. For some reason, I'm really taken by that design. I don't have much in it, just a couple of small trays and a pair of console candleholders.

I found a similar rampant lion maker's mark in my reference; it belongs to Gebruder Deyhle, a German maker of flatware and hollowware established in 1820. The crown & crescent is a German mark and it came into use in 1888.

Thanks Taloncrest and Paul Lemieux!

I did not want to assume the 2nd mark was a crown! I shall look up Gebruder Deyhle (thanks Paul) and see what I can find out about age and pattern name. It looks to be well-cared for; very little wear, no damage or repairs that I can tell.

I assume it is a tea tray by the size and roomy handles.

I like the design as well, taloncrest. Graceful and fairly simple. I especially like the (sort of Danish) florish on the handles.

Thanks again. I'll be back to follow-up!

Another possibility is E.L. Vietor of Darmstadt, active from 1890-1910. The lion rampant looks like his, but I am puzzled by what loosk like an "S" following the 830 purity mark.

The S next to the 830 stands for "Silver" (or "silber", or "solv", depending on where it was made...). One usually sees the 830S on Scandinavian pieces though.

According to my reference, the Vietor company made silver smalls designed by artists from the Darmstadt artist colony. This does not seem to fit with the tray. However, I have to admit, your lion mark resembles the Vietor mark in my reference more than it resembles the Deyhle lion mark. But illustrations of marks and marks themselves aren't always exactly identical, and based on the descriptions I see of those two makers, Deyhle seems far more likely.

Unfortunately, I only have Wyler's book so I'm limited to web research.

Is it permissible to post links to other sites?

On another site, this same string of hallmarks is designated as "unidentified" ... while their designated Deyhle lion has a "leg up" as if prancing.

My lion's paws are firmly planted, and rather clubbed. And his tail terminates in a straight dash, unlike most of the undulating tails out there.

I did, however, find 2 auctions as well as a silver dealer's site that shows this exact lion as Deyhle's.

Also wanted to mention that I was confused about the 'S' as well, thinking it could be Norwegian or Danish.

I also am seeing more Deyhle '800' silver rather than 830'.

I do want to post some links if I can.
