[26-1454] Hello, Can anyone help me with a mark on silver spoons and forks. I saw them in antiques shop and I am willing to buy them. They are all marked with stamp APOLO with single L. and another stamp with number 84 and some kind of animal near it. I can't tell if they are silver or silverplate. I did look in google and I found mark Apollo but I think it is different from this one. And also this # 84 doesn't make sense to me- I have seen it only on Russian silver.I cannot provide you with pictures before I buy them. I would really appreciate your help on this! Thank you! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Here are two pictures of the forks and the marking. Could you please date them for me! Actually I was wrong. It is APOLLO with double L. and the second stamp in a lion with the letters VH and #84 as you can see. All the best!

Hello Mitko07, I've looked yesterday at internet sites but I also couldn't find it. It's difficult when you have not the full knouwledge of silver (and marks). I also just started at this forum sometimes you get quick answers and sometimes it takes a longer period. What I think it could be englisch or american. I never have seen a lion (lying down) as silvermark. The 84 figure can be IP: Logged |

It's French silverplate, the square shape of the maker's mark and 84 for the amount of plating are clear indicators. This information was posted by a member of another forum concerning a similarly marked piece: ">Apollo< was the registered mark of Francois-Frionnet of Paris. The lion with 'VH' was registered for the "Société Générale de Banques en Guinée coutellerie et Orfèvrerie, Francois-Frionnet, succ." My French is to bad to determine, whether that Société is the successor of Francois-F. or the other way round. Maybe someone out there can help. Both companies were listed in the same street, under different numbers." ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

Hello dragonflywink and silverhunter and thank you very much for you efforts to help me! First I thought they are made by Apollo Silver CO, but actually not. They are definitely silverplate and I guess dragonflywink is absolute right that it also french made. I also saw this similar posting where "Société Générale de Banques en Guinée coutellerie et Orfèvrerie, Francois-Frionnet is mentioned , but by myself I could not find more information relating this company and the appolo mark. I think silverhunter is quite right about the age" The style of the silver is perhaps 1920 or s?", but I will be very happy if someone give me more specific information about the age and appolo mark/company. I saw the hallmark of Francois-Frionnet but it is orthogonal box with the name inside and has nothing common with the mark VH + lion. Well that's for now my friends! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Mitko07, Wrong country (I'm sorry), right time? Perhaps I will find a hotel some day, named APOLLO and will be surprised when I can eat with the same tablesilver you showed(joke!). IP: Logged |
