We've got this beautiful Rococo Revival coffeepot. Clearly marked "Hgr" What is puzzling us, is the style. Rococo Revival was not a sought after pattern in 1951, it doesn't seem logical for that date and seems far more logical for 1851, the height of the revival. Could it be made in 1851 and Gruns mark added later. Appreciate any input. See also: UNKNOWN MARK AROUND 1800 IP: Logged |

Hi, I have a tea set in a very similar design by the Danish firm Grann & Laglye that I'm certain is from 1939-40, so I don't think you can conclude Rococo was not popular in mid 20th century. Is there another mark for the assay master ("stadsguardeinstempler"), which would give you conclusive proof of 1951? He was Johannes Siggaard and his mark is an oval containing a large letter S crossed by a smaller letter J. If you haven't been there already, www.nobelantik.dk is a very helpful site for lovers of Danish silver. IP: Logged |

Interestingly enough, I have a Grann & Laglye coffee pot, also from 1951 with just the 3 castle mark with date and their maker's mark, but no assay master's mark. While researching that pot I found a pitcher online also from 1951, same thing, makers mark and 3 castle mark with date but no assay master. Perhaps Mr. Siggaard was not feeling well that year? Dating something by its style only works for setting an earliest possible date since makers tend to keep going back to reproduce older styles to meet demand from the public. This is especially true for the classical styles such as rococo, early American, etc. IP: Logged |

Definitely 1951. For better or for worse, rococo style silver will always have a customer base. IP: Logged |
