[01-1453] I have a set of what appears to military commemorative silver dishes(possibly french) They are marked AIE lyon. The AIE is interlaced with Lyon underneath. Can anyone give any information on the meaning of these marks? IP: Logged |

You have given us some tantalizing evidence so far, but more information is needed. French silver marks can be complicated. However, you should always find a silver standard mark and a maker's mark in a lozenge. On silverplate, the maker's mark is in a square. On a plate or platter you would expect these marks to be on the rim. Depending on the age of the silver, other marks could be found, including a letter or symbol for the place of manufacture for silver made in the 18th Century. For Lyon, the mark is a D. Place of manufacture is not spelled out. Therefore if this is French silver, I assume that "AIE Lyon" is the name of the organization or event commemorated. Hope this helps. IP: Logged |

further information: There are two marks both are stamped the first is circular in shape formed from an E on the left an I in the middle and an A on the right with lyon forming the bottom of the circle. The second is identical to the first except it is contained in a square. The items commemorate the decommissioning of french navy vessels with the badge of the vessel set in the center. There are some small letters on the badge( A Augis). Thanks IP: Logged |

Augis 1830 is an important Lyon-based French family jeweler, created in 1830 by Eùgene Augis. In 1907, one of his successors, Alphonse created A Augis, a factory dedicated to making military badges. It would seem your dishes were either made by Augis, in one of their sub-divisions named AIE, or were made independently using insignia made by A Augis. The absence of French official marks suggests that they are not silver. I have seen elsewhere on the internet a question about AIE posted in a Pewter questions section. Augis 1830 can be contacted via their web page www.augis1830.com IP: Logged |
