Hi,

I have some sugar tongs, on the inside handle its marked Roberto Boker y o, and on the other side it has writing I can't make out, begins with the letter P, then silver L & S.

Can I please get some help identifying what the word I can't make out is?

Thanks for the help

The Roberto Boker inscription is the retailer. Roberto Boker (1843-1912) was a German immigrant who founded an important hardware store in Mexico City.

See: www.boker.net The store continues in business to this day in a magnificent building, constructed 1898-1900, see:

But I'm afraid I can't help with the other mark, any chance of posting a photo?

quote:

The story of this family goes back about 1640 years when in Remscheid, Germany (near Cologne and Düsseldorf) initiated the Boker tool making, forging hammers manufactured with water-driven, and selling items manufactured mainly in Eastern Europe.

In 1863 the young Roberto Boker and his brother left his hometown to set up a wholesale business in New York, providing the products manufactured by his family and other manufacturers of Remscheid and Solingen neighbor. Both populations are renowned worldwide for their quality in tools and cutlery.

During the American Civil War, Robert Boker managed to sustain your business until mid-1865. At that time Mexico ruled the Austrian Emperor Maximilian.

Don Roberto probably thought it would be a good idea to start a business in Mexico, and that at this time the German language was the second European language spoken in the country.

On 1 November 1865, a modest store began selling to the public and neighboring populations of Mexico City.

Over the next year was very successful, selling products from Germany and other Americans he met during his stay in New York, products such as sewing machines "SINGER" steam cars "STUDEBAKER" typewriters "UNDERWOOD" Mexico marks introduced by our company.

For the year 1898 had acquired several properties to build the magnificent building that we still have our offices, just 2 blocks from the Zocalo. This building was the most modern building in the country, opened on July 3, 1900 by the then President, Don He let Diaz.

The company survived the Mexican Revolution and the two World Wars, through hard work and continuous, in-depth knowledge of products, market and of course, thanks to the good customers as well as the thousands of employees through have worked here many years.

In early 1975 we suffered a major fire that destroyed everything inside the building. Begin rebuilding the columns and beams reinforced with metal rods and concrete, which ultimately benefited us as strong earthquakes of September 1985 caused us no further damage.

Don Francisco Boker, the son of Don Roberto, oversaw the construction of the building process (1898-1900), his son Mr. Gunther Boker came to work in 1933 until his retirement in 1986. Today companies manage Pedro (1966), responsible for operating, and Klaus (from 1970) responsible for financial matters.

During the decades of the 60s and 70s when imports were restricted, we adopt growing and very close relations with most Mexican manufacturers of tools and cutlery.

Through the years the company became a very solid reputation for selling quality goods at competitive prices as well as reliable service.

The name "BOKER" is well known throughout the Republic and several of our clients have been already two or more generations, a fact that is not as common in countries like ours.

Not good news, I'm afraid. The missing word is Potosi. Although Potosi is a very famous silvermine in Bolivia, "Potosi Silver" was a deliberately confusing name for nickel silver, otherwise known as alpaca. It is a white metal alloy containing no silver. There is a Potosi Silver L&S serving spoon currently on e-bay, INCORRECTLY described as "probably sterling". Judging from the look of this, a date roughly around 1900 might seem possible.
