[01-1732]

I have recently come across a large ( 18 x 23) handled serving platter marked on the back as Nickel server and bearing the hallmark of Miyata. Platter is in hardshell, lined case.

I am just wondering if someone can point me in the direction of some additional info on the company.

This looks like the type of presentation silverplate and/or nickle silver made in the last 85 years. I would have expected it to be engraved with comments on some special event, like a retirement or award. I too believe Miyata is Japanese. Nice item, handsome and useful.

Thank you. From what I have been able to find out from family members, it is likely that this was purchased by during a visit to Japan in the 40's. That's probably why it was never engraved - I never would have considered that as a norm for this piece. Thank you much for the info. Finding any info on this company has been nearly impossible. I'm researching these pieces so that when they return to storage I can include some information on them for whomever they get handed down to next.

Nickle silver is an alloy that has no set composition requirements. Many makers apply the name rather generously to silver looking alloys while some make up all kinds of fanciful names that incorporate the word "silver" such as "German Silver". Most nickle silver actually has no silver in it at all - is an alloy of nickle, copper and zinc that only looks like silver.

I suspect that Miyata is not so much a company as a brand name. Who exactly made this remains the question. My other recollection is that Miyata is more frequently encountered as a trophy or award than as tableware. I have seen a few trays of this type. Each one was engraved and presented. The box makes an especially effective way of displaying the award. They were upscale items: sales leaders, golf winners, things like that. A very nice piece. Were there other silver type things associated with this in your family collection?

Yes there is. There is also a full tea service that is also in the same type of box. I believe there is one more boxed set (possibly another service) but they are still in storage unit so i am unable to provide photos right now. I should be able to get to them this weekend.
