About 1979, the Mexican eagle marking system was retired to be replaced by a letter letter - number mark to indicate the silversmith.

For example: TN-28

- The first letter ( TN-28) indicates location city.
- The second letter ( TN -28) is the initial of the smiths last name (surname).
- And the number ( TN-28) indicates (in this example) that it was the 28th smith to register. We have also heard the number could mean it was the 28th smith whose last name began with N.

For the location letter, what we most often see is: T, M, G or C
Presumed to be:

  • T for Taxco
  • M for Mexico City
  • G for Guadalajara
  • C for Cuernavaca

Is there is an available list that matches the letters and numbers to silversmiths?

For the most part, no. Hougart's list matches some letter + number marks that can be ascribed to certain makers, i.e., MM-34 is Los Ballesteros but most of them are unascribed or give a name that doesn't mean much. T-24 was, as I understand it, ascribed only to Spratling Successors.

Thanks vathek.

Yesterday (without being able to speak Spanish) I found what I believe were 80+ Mexican government/Mexican commerce organizations e-mail addresses......

Only the Consulate of Mexico in Leamington, Ontario, Canada has been nice enough to reply:

To whom it may concern.

We’ve received your email and made a short research in order to provide you an answer. Unfortunately the information you’re needing is too specialized and we’re unable to provide you an accurate answer. Please contact the Mexican Mint (http://www.cmm.gob.mx/) or the Mexican Numismatic Society (http://www.sonumex.blogspot.mx/).

So far I am not sure I got the proper e-mail addresses for the above recommendations, nevertheless, I have reached out and haven't heard back?

Maybe we will hear something, eventually?
