[26-2371] Continuing the posts about pieces my husband and I received from his family, this is the most interesting and beautiful piece in my opinion.
The ship is about 15 inches from bow to stern. The shields on either side clip on and can be removed. In researching the piece on the internet, I've found that there are collectors of silver Viking ships like this one - not surprising. I've also found conflicting information as to whether this is silver or silver plate, and this is my question. My guess is that the "S" and "P" on either side of Magnus Aase mark indicate that it is plate. However, it cleaned up much better than any of the other plate pieces we've received!
Regardless, I love this piece for its beauty and its symbolism of my husband's heritage. (I wish my pictures did it justice!)

Weird - someone just asked me about one of these a few days ago, described as sterling rather than silverplate (along with a lot of other nonsense about the marks). I'm one of those folks who collect Viking ships and other Viking related objects (a nod to my Danish heritage), have seen a number of these Th. Olsens/Aase ships over the years and they are very nice - and for some reason, most Scandinavian silverplate does seem to hold up quite well. I don't believe these are much older than mid 20th century, and it is silverplate as indicated by the 'P' (Plett=Plate) along with the lack of proper marks indicating a silver fineness numerically. It appears both with the 'M.AASE' (Magnus Aase), in use from the early 20th century until 1993, as well as with a more recent 'H.AASE' (Harald Aase) - the firm is now named 'AS Theodor Olsens Eftf. Harald Aase & Co Sølvvareverksteder'. The conjoined 'AM' mark became Theodor Olsens' shortly after Aase bought the firm in 1903. ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

At a danish auction site I found one today. Its made of 830 silver according to auction house. It also has an engraving from 1972.
here is the mark from that auction. IP: Logged |

So...given the mark shown, do you believe that it is solid silver? ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

Hi Elizabeth. I also like your viking ship centerpiece though I do not collect them. I think it would look really nice with some colorful fruit stacked up in it. Or, at Christmas time you could put a group of gingerbread men in it even. As Cheryl said it is silver plate and not solid silver, but it is in very nice condition. I would think that it has not seen much use. Hose_dk, It sounds like that auction house does not have any silver experts on staff to tell them what they have and they are trying to get a high price by claiming it is solid 800 silver which it is not. I wonder what their return policy is if the buyer finds someone knowledgable who can glance at the markings and tell them that their viking ship is really just silver plate and not solid 800 silver? Thank you, all! There still seems to be disagreement on the quality. On the internet, I have found the exact same piece where some claim it is solid and others say no. I don't think this is piece that my husband's grandparents brought with them to America, rather, more likely it is a piece his aunt purchased on one of her trips to Norway to see relatives - 1940's / 50's maybe. So the date, Cheryl, makes sense. In one of the pictures you can see the gold wrapped chocolates I've had it for a week or so. I plan to get a some very nice artificial greenery to put in it for everyday use, but the ship doesn't leak, so I do plan to use it with flowers as a centerpiece at times. IP: Logged |

Hi Elizabeth. There is no disagreement about the fact that this is silver plated and not solid silver - at least not among people who are knowledgable about silver and its markings. If there is disagreement it is with an auction house that apparently either does not know silver or is trying to get a higher price for itself by being deceptive. I prefer to believe the former but unfortuantely on occasion I have seen the latter. [This message has been edited by Kimo (edited 02-20-2013).] IP: Logged |

I dont know whether its silver or not. The return policy of the auktion house is 100% whether its describe correct or not. If a buyer say "I dont want this" it can be returned. So simple is that. No questions asked. Thats Denmark way. IP: Logged |

Great piece. Hope your put the faces in the Great Faces thread. It is amazing to me that all of the shields are still with the ship. Whatever you use it for will be attractive. IP: Logged |

Here is an American version by Gorham. It is not plated.

Thanks, all! Nice piece by Goraham, Richard. That looks like it is specifically made for flowers with the stem divider insert. AHWT, I'm not familiar with the "Great Faces" thread, but I don't think I have rights to post anywhere but here in the New Members forum. I'll search for the thread though. IP: Logged |

Hi Richard. That is a really fine example of a Viking ship centerpiece. I can tell by the quality and detail of the workmanship that it would be a solid silver example. IP: Logged |

That wonderful Gorham/Durgin ship has been in my 'fantasy file' for years, believe the flower arranger is gold-plated base metal. Another object on my rather unrealistic wish-list is an 1889-90 jardiniere by Torolf Prytz for Jacob Tostrup, shown in Widar Halen's Dragons from the North:
Some of my little Scandinavian Viking ship salts - the one at back left with the horn shaker is by Th. Olsens; the amber enamel lined by Anton Hansen of Copenhagen; the one on the stand by Nils Hansen of Oslo (c. 1930s); the little low one in front by Marius Hammer of Bergen (c. 1910s); the two at right are Swedish, without maker's marks, silverplate at back, sterling in front.
Even though silverplate, Elisabeth's piece is very well-made and desirable, I've never run across one that was low enough to entice me into adding it to my collection (keep hoping though). Do have one of a similar size in cast aluminum, never worry about damaging it, so it's been filled with all sorts of fruits, flowers, etc. - right now it has three glass candleholders resting on a layer of polished pebbles. Also have a couple of old iron ones that have disproportionately large Viking figurines standing in them - makes me smile... ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

Cheryl - those are lovely! Thank you for sharing! You all are giving me picture envy. I'll get the good camera out today and take a better picture of my piece. The ones posted were taken with my iPhone. IP: Logged |
