I own tree silverplated winecoasters with the crest of Peter von Scholten governor of the then Danish Virgin Islands 1827-48. He was the person to stop slavery on the islands 1848. I herited the coasters from my grandfather who was director of Bethlehem sugar plantation at St. Croix 1903-ca. 1930. The coasters are silver plated with mahoghany bottom. I suppose they are made in the period 1830-48 in UK or USA. The coasters are marked vith tvo times four arrows crossing at an almost right angle. The arrows are arranged exactly lige the two times three arrows shown in Dorothy Rainwaters Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers on page 164 (revised fourth edition) for VM Hutton & Sons Ltd. Does anyone know if the mark with four arrows each way is also by Hutton & sons ??? Danesilver IP: Logged |

What a treasure! When I visited St. Croix a few years ago, I heard all about von Scholten ... who, as I recall, got in trouble with the authorities for his attempts (ultimately successful) to abolish slavery. A real hero. IP: Logged |
