I'm interested in tracing any information about the makers Widmers ltd and William John Ayers (both marks registered in London)during the 1920s and 1930s, when they were producing silver and gold overlays for fountain pens manufactured by Conway Stewart and other British manufacturers. I'd particularly like to know the addresses (or at least the general area of London)they worked from during this period, also what other types of wares they may have produced. Thanks in advance, if anybody can help! IP: Logged |

Both of the concerns that you are interested in are covered in 'The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths, Jewellers and Allied traders 1838-1914' By John Culme, published by the Antique Collector's Club. borrowing from Mr Culme.. WJA takes over from James Ayres October 8th 1913 at 70 Wynatt Street, Clerkenwell, London (where JA had been since 1876) and is still there as late as 1944!! - Widmers Ltd was started by Casimer Widmer & Thamas Young. They became W Ltd 1916 with Harry Alphonse W as a director at 32 & 34 Clerkenwell Road Both the above are sometimes referred to as 'silver mounters' which would fit your interest in the pens. Clerkenwell was the heart of the manufacturing jewellery and silversmithing business of London up to the 1939-1945 war -masses of workshops some larger but many very small, using their position to supply the specialist needs of neighbours who didn't need to have a huge factory as everything was available 'around the corner'. - As late as the 1950's one would still see wheel-barrows being pushed around the area piled high with unfinished goods off to have some specialist operation performed upon them!! (And nobody got mugged!!) IP: Logged |

Just a note on Silver Lyons always insightful comments, about clerkenwell, It still today is a center for silversmithing and a host of other trades, although they are all getting thin on the ground compared to back in the 70's. But a walk around will still show that even with the huge price of property in central London the trades hang on. IP: Logged |
