I have a silver vesta case given to my grandfather on his 21st birthday. It shows the marks for Chester and the year 1898. The maker is a JMB. I wonder if anyone on the list can identify this maker for me and help me find more information. Thank you. Joseph Huxley IP: Logged |

JOHN MILLWARD BANKS of 6-7 Northampton Street Birmingham Established 1863 A manfacturer and supplier of goods to retailers. He has a showroom at 12-14 Beake Street in London's West End from c.1893-1905. He died in 1911 and the business was continued by his son through to about 1926. There is an advertisement of his in "The Jeweller and Metalworker" magazine, October 1st 1889 (this still continues as "The Jeweller" and can be helpful if you need any more information.) - in which 'match boxes' feature. It was common for Birmingham manufacturers to send their wares to be marked in Chester as it was both cheaper and quicker than using the Birmingham Assay Office. Hope this helps!
