[26-0418] My husband and I have casually collected silver as our budget permits and have picked up some little pieces here and there chosen only because they are to our liking. I am getting more and more interested in learning about silver and would like to start with identifying a couple of the pieces I have. I have a set of demitasse spoons 4 1/4" in length. So far I have identified that they are indeed Sheffield sterling. I believe they were made between 1891-1913 and the makers mark is "HA". Can anyone tell me who the maker is? If I can learn this information, I would like to try to find out what the pattern is. It is a very simple set of spoons with a shell at the end of the handle. Thanks for any help!

HA is Atkins Brothers (HA is Henry Atkin). If you have identified the date range you should be able to fix it more exactly by the date letter which started with a in 1893, continuing in sequence until z in 1917, omitting j. The pattern sounds like it is either fiddle and shell or old English and shell. You should be able to Google for those phrases to find examples. Thanks Phil! I will google the patterns you mentioned. The date letter is "i" so that would make these spoons 1901. Do you know if the date charts can be found online anywhere? I have located one for pieces made in London. Would all British silver follow the same chart? Anyway, thanks for your help. When I get my digital camera back which is on loan to a friend, I will take a picture of one of these spoons and post it. Yuki IP: Logged |

I've add pictures to my original post. Not very good, since I used my scanner, but it gives enough of an idea of what the spoons look like. I have a request in with some other web site I found to help identify the pattern. English shell seems to be the closest match, but I cannot find the Atkin. Maybe the other woman I've sent pictures to will be able to locate it. I would like to have one more spoon to round out the three I currently own! IP: Logged |

Each British assay office used its own date letter sequence until 1975 when the 4 remaining offices (London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh) started to use the same sequence. So the London letters will not help with Sheffield dating, but, yes, i is 1901. Sorry, I don't know of an online date table for Sheffield. Phil IP: Logged |
