Hello, I recently went through my mother's button box and came upon three sterling silver buttons bearing the markings for Birmingham, 1901 and the maker's mark S.M.L contained in a rectangular "box" stamp. They were so incredibly tarnished that I could not decipher their hallmarks until I had polished them many times. Inspite of many hours' research, I cannot seem to find out who S.M.L is. These buttons are about 2 and one quarter cm wide with a woman in Greek-like attire(upper body only) playing a lyre. They are finely crafted with great detail in the features, upswept hair with hanging tendrils, lyre ,garb etc. Each is slightly different in subtle ways and placement of hallmarks; as if handmade. They are like "silver cameos" in a sense. Hopefully someone can solve the mystery of S.M.L for me. With "grateful" expectations, Margaret (brand new member) IP: Logged |

to Richard Kurtzman: It is not a matter of "doing a little work on my part". I am a novice and have inadequate equipment to produce images clear enough to post, but thank you for taking the time to respond.Margaret To PhilO: Thank you for your helpful response to a first time writer. You have enabled me to do further research so I am most grateful. Sincerely, Margaret IP: Logged |
