can someone inform me of the name of this silversmith? the initials are separately punched in a round surround, found on a small (4.5") spoon assayed in sheffield in 1954-5. the handle of the spoon is beautifully pierced to form " Montreal" in flowing silver script. was this manufacturer known to make souvenir spoons for places outside england, or is it more probable that it was decorated here in canada? any info is greatly appreciated. i thank you for your help. sincerely, mark77 IP: Logged |

i believe i've found the answer to my own question. the mark most probably is that of the sponsor, henry birks and sons ltd., now known as birks jewelers (canada). can anyone suggest ways to research sponsors'marks? thanks. mark77 IP: Logged |

If you are asking specifically about Canadian marks, John Langdon's 1998 Canadian Silversmiths 1700 - 1900 is the best place to start. [This message has been edited by swarter (edited 02-17-2008).] IP: Logged |

Mark77 I am not clear about how you mean to research sponsors marks? The only help that comes to mind, and you probably know this, is that when something is made in England it has to be marked to be sold. The assay office cares little who made it but who will pay the bill for the assay... So the mark we call a makers mark is actually called a sponsors mark by the assay office. A maker can be a sponsor, or like the Birk spoon the company behind the maker is the sponsor. Today (modern era) any one can get a punch made and register it at Goldsmiths hall (the assay office) and have anything marked, my favorite was a rectangle of silver marked and hung on a chain... sold as jewelry. So back to your question do you want more info on Birks or who they use in Sheffield? If the latter, my guess is you would have get Birks to tell you. Hope this helps?
