Dear all, My wife recently purchased a knife set for a dear friend. The set is by Allen & Darwin from Portland Works, 55 Arundel Street Sheffield, made in 1892. I wanted to find out a bit more about the factory, who Allen and Darwin was and maybe something about the pattern (will post photo if anybody knows anything about A&D Patterns). It would be a nice additional gift to provide some provenance to the knife and fork set. Thanks for a nice opportunity to get to know the wonderful world of silver, Jens Carl IP: Logged |

According to one site that had a truly lovely pearl handled knife, made by them that was sold. It had a chased blade. A dealer told me the date they had was 1896. At another site I found them listed under cutlery makers with a date of 1865 and the address of 55 Arundel St Sheffield. IP: Logged |

Charles James Allen Sidney Darwin fl. c.1892 - 1928 when the name was changed to Allen's. They made good quality silver plated goods knives, forks and spoons but especially knives and fish servers. The ferrule on many of their pieces, especially horn or bakerlite or ivory carving sets, is often hallmarked silver. IP: Logged |
