[26-1952] Hi all, My first post. I collect a little silver and antiques. I do have about thirty items or so of silver, I find it very interesting, the history appeals to me. I am not a dealer or seller, I have sold nothing. I work full time, this is a hobby. As for the platter, I found it up the road at a farm garage sale. It has a makers mark as Mappin, not Mappin and Webb. The other marks are as follows possibly a panther head, and maybe a crown and then there is a star mark with 7 points to the star, with a letter inside, maybe a t. There are no other marks. The platter is 4.95 lbs and measures 15.5 x 20 inches, oval with a soldered band on the circumference. I have spent time looking to see what the makers marks are, I understand and researched what appears to be a Mappin mark but very little info has come up. Joseph Mappin prior to Mappin and Webb seems to makes sense, and prior to Mappin Bros. So I don't know, I thought somebody with some experience here would be willing to share their knowledge as I am certainly no expert and realistically may not be able to add much to the ten years experience on the site some members have, however, the site is for novices too. Any ideas? Thanks,

Hi & welcome! I believe this mark is their electro plate mark. Circa 1865-1904. Jersey [This message has been edited by jersey (edited 02-01-2010).] IP: Logged |

Hi Jersey, Got it, yes, electroplate, Mappin Brothers with the sun hallmark on the left, M B as the two center hallmarks and Mappin as the fourth. Yes, anywhere from 1850 - 1905 . Thanks for the intel, this one was really a challenge for me, I just could not place it. There are no numbers below for a pattern number, but that is what the photo shows on a web site for the hallmark arrangement. And, now, thanks to the posts I also know how to post a photo.
