Dear All,

Sitting in the cutlery drawer for more years than I care to contemplate has been one odd fork. I presume it is silver plate, but the marks on the back look as though they are telling a great story to anyone who knows the key. Here's the picture:

So, does an owl's face in a shield made of an inverted pumpkin mean anything to you? Or a stylized bat in flight? Or the astrological symbol for Venus? I'd really love to know the significance of the marks on this fork.

Thanks in advance for any comments you can offer.

Regards,
Mike

This is also probably plated nickel silver ... though I don't know what the "JG" in JGNS stands for. It is likely late-19th-century English Sheffield manufacture, from the style of the marks.

Thanks very much for your reply. I am sure that you are right in your dating, as the design of the fork is also typically nineteenth century (very similar in style to a silver fork I have which was made by Thomas Evans in London in 1815, although the nickel silver item has much longer tines, and is more crudely finished).

I'm not so sure about it being an electroplated example, as there is no brass showing through anywhere (and it takes a lot of polishing). Again, perhaps it is solid nickel silver, and J.G. is the maker's name. I'd still love to know how they came up with the designs for the faux hallmarks!
