The making of the

Martin Bowl

by Fred Zweig, metalsmith
January, 2004 - 2017
page 7

The bowl emerges from the pickle frosted and clean and ready for final polish by hand.

Fluting is accomplished with a series of blows using carved wooden punches and wooden stakes. The size of this bowl will require the use of an apprentice to hold the bowl over the stake while I hammer in the flutes with the punches.

The color is achieved with heat from the torch, patience and a bit of serendipity. A beeswax finish is applied to the bowl to help preserve and deepen the color. The final dimensions of the bowl: 3.25" high by 12.5" diameter.
