| "This is a pin in the Evangeline pattern by Unger Brothers. It is one of the more well-known Unger designs and was used by the company on everything from jewelry to powder jars to teaspoons. It is a large piece, about 3" wide and more than 3" high. Pins such as this were a mystery to me. Why were they so large? Any why did they invariably have a pin shank on the reverse that was so thick it was guaranteed to poke a huge hole in the fabric of any garment to which it was pinned? Although they are wonderful as large brooches, the impracticality of the fasteners on these pieces was a puzzle to me for many years." |
