Slide #19

silde

"This is another page from the 1904 Unger catalog. In the center is the design that we just saw in the previous slide. Here, it is the centerpiece of a group of four matching pins, one large and three small, which comprise a "waist set." These are meant to be pinned all around a silk fabric belt - the large pin in the center front, a small pin at each side of the waist, and the third small pin in the center back. This is the same placement that we see in belts of the time, when such pieces were joined by single or double chains into a full belt (as shown on Page 3.) It is not unusual to find two or three matching small pins together - the large center pin could be used as a brooch by younger generations, but uses for several small matching pins were not so easy to identify, and the three smaller pieces of the "waist set" are still commonly found "
