In many ways, pipe tobacco or fine cigars (hereafter: "tobacco") is like wine or orchids. Tobacco products are natural, organic and sensitive to their environment. Tobacco products are the result of a carefully crafted controlled combination of temperature and moisture. Tobacco products can be stored in a humidor until they're ready to be smoked. For the true aficionado, a humidor is an essential piece of equipment.
A humidor, like this one, is an elegantly simple device that keeps cigars/tobacco at its best by maintaining conditions similar to those in which the tobacco is grown, fermented and/or was rolled.
Tobacco products left out in a heated or air-conditioned room, will dry out and die as quickly as the most delicate flower. In a properly maintained humidor, the atmosphere inside will closely mimic that of a tropical isle and so your cigars/tobacco can be kept for years.
A proper humidor (like this one) requires a device that maintains moisture levels. This humidor’s top has a compartment for cotton (or sponge, other absorbent material) to be moistened. Turning the top 180 degrees so the vent slits are on the inside will add moisture to your cigars/tobacco. Or turn the top so the slits are on the outside (not adding moisture).
A humidor is, quite simply, a storage container designed to allow controlled air flow and moisture control. Without air flow and moisture control the container would simply be a cigar/tobacco box/jar and can not be called a humidor.
Note: a humidor is not a sealed environment. Inside an airtight moisturized container, cigars/tobacco is likely to become moldy. For that reason, it's better to have air circulating between the cigars/tobacco as provided in this humidor (so don’t pack the cigars/tobacco in too tightly).
There are no standard (hallmarks) or makers marks on the humidor. The humidor weights 2 lbs. 0.5 ozs. It is 9.5 inches tall. (see photos). The exterior of this silverplate humidor is in near excellent condition. The interior is in good condition, with some of the interior plating missing in spots (see photos). Overall, we rate the condition as Very Good but judge for yourself by looking at the photos.
