[01-0038] Winged Hammer Mark - Who is the maker? Ben Randolph forwarded this question to me. So far, my casual research hasn't turned up anything. Are the "wings" and the "G. S." an indication that this maker may have a relationship to George Shiebler or is this just an interesting coincidence? Do you know who this mark belongs to?

I recently saw a set of Iced beverage sppons with the some of the same marks on ebay and asked a friend who was bidding on them if he knew who's they were. His replay is as follows "The Wings & T mark is for the Gaylord Craft shop. Gaylord was a rehabilitation home for WW I vets where they taught silversmithing. William Waldo Dodge learned here. It still exists as a rehab/therapy center, located in Wallingford, CT." The G.S. is probably the special mark of the particular craftsman. IP: Logged |

Your information is partially correct. The GS stood for Gaylord Sanitarian. As one time Gaylord was a TB sanitarian. Silver was done there as a way to keep patients busy. There is very little of it in existance. to my knowledge they made mostly spoons. I have called the PR office at Gaylord and am waiting for them to call me back. I will forward any more information I get to you. I did see a display they loaned to the American Silver Museum when it was located in Meriden. The Museum is in process of being reopened in Wallingford. The building is currently under renovation. We are hoping to get the spoon exhibit from Gaylord to display in the Musem. Only time will tell. IP: Logged |

I compiled the following information from annual reports of the Gaylord Silvercraft Shop. This covers 1925-29 and 1931-44. In 1944 the Gaylord Silvercraft Shop closed operations. There are 139 types of items cataloged (see below). The total number of items made was 28,990.5. During these 19 years, 481 patients worked 100,187 hours to produce the 28,990.5 items sold in the shop. Each patient worked an average of 208.3 total hours for the shop. This means that on average it took approximately 3.5 hours to produce each item. The original Gaylord Farm Sanatorium has evolved into the Gaylord Hospital. In 2002 the hospital will be celebrating their 100th birthday. They would like to receive donations of Gaylord Silvercraft silver for inclusion in the celebration. I made some inquiries and this is one response: October 2, 1999 To: SMP In regard to your request for information on the "Gaylord Craft Shop", the name I found was Gaylord Silvercraft, and the workshop was part of the Gaylord Farm Sanatorium, Wallingford, CT, run by the New Haven County Anti-Tuberculosis Association. The following information is taken from an annual report for Gaylord Farm Sanatorium for 1923. The silver working was done as part of the vocational training and occupational therapy for the tuberculosis patients. After the Federal Board for Vocational Education ceased funding this work at Gaylord, the board feeling that the silverwork would pay for itself persuaded Mrs. W. W. Dodge, Jr. of Meriden to come on board at a nominal salary to develop this workshop. Mr. W. W. Dodge was one of the U.S. servicemen who was at the sanitorium during WWI, assigned by the War Risk Insurance Bureau. He also, as well as his wife, gave great assistance to setting up the workshop, in fact giving many of the designs that were made into silver pieces by the workshop. Dodge also wrote the bit of verse that opens the chapter in the report on the Gaylord silvercraft: This piece of work I fashioned, saw it grow; And so, each piece of work, each bit of art, The information mentions a registered trademark for the silver work but does not describe it, but the name is Gaylord Silvercraft. There is still a Gaylord Farm Rehabilitation Center listed in the Wallingford directory as well as a Gaylord Hospital, which is on Gaylord Farms Rd. Sincerely, Martha H. Smart IP: Logged |

Hi I just got this serving fork and was very interested after reading this post. I thought I would share this with everyone and ask a question: (I tried to post a pic of the mark and a close-up of the hammered surface but Photobucket isn't cooperating today. Is anyone else having problems?) This piece doesn't have the GS initials so is it still a Gaylord piece or another maker?

Sorry about that Scott. The first picture posted correctly or so I thought but then I couldn't delete the post. I gave up after the umpteenth try. June, yes it does. It has the "winged hammer", "Sterling" and "Hand Wrought". IP: Logged |

Thanks Scott, I don;t know whats happened to photobucket. I used to be able to upload a pic and it gave me the img code to post. The sizing was always correct and it worked beautifully. I see there is another post about image hosts so I will peruse that topic. And thanks June, if I can get to another host to upload the pics,I will. IP: Logged |
