Dear Margi:

Thank you for the opportunity to go behind the scenes with the presentation silver at the New York Historical Society. With the PBS series on New York running this week, it was really great to see the silver evidences of the moments that are often missed.

You made history come alive and I look forward to many more visits to the collections at the Museum.

Sincerely,

Priscilla

Tuesday, November 16 was cold and windy when several of us arrived at the New-York Historical Society, but the warm welcome we received made us quickly forget the weather outside. Margi Hofer, the curator of this exhibition, whose enthusiasm for her subject was apparent from her first sentence, treated us to a wonderfully informative tour of their exhibition of Presentation Silver from the collection. Having done significant research on the pieces on display, Margi was able to elaborate at length on the descriptions on the cards that are placed next to each of the pieces. She told us that a number of the items in the collection have the letters or written commendations that accompanied them at the time of the event. The most memorable item in the exhibition, to me, was a magnificent urn by International. Prepared to pay tribute to one of the more nefarious Tammany Hall scalawags, the bust of an Indian chief is portrayed on one side; he was of the fictional tribe from which Tammany Hall took its name. On the other side of the urn were the images of the other Tammany bosses, each about two inches tall. It was beautifully executed, and simply awful in its garishness, and in what it represents.

Opening in about a year, the Luce Study Center will be the on the top floor of the Society's building. In the meantime, they are seeking funds to help cover the cost of making digital images of all 3,000 pieces of their silver. It is anticipated that 90% of the objects will be on display, grouped by type, and accessible to all visitors, although some of the pieces may be stored in such a manner that a prior notice will be required to gain access.

All who attended are most grateful to both Ms Hofer and the Society for the tour. Two of our group had previewed the exhibition on their own several days before, and said that the guided tour made an interesting exhibit a fascinating experience.
