I am giving a talk at the Appraisers National Conference in November and I need your help in compiling a list of useful sites on the Internet. What sites do you find most helpful in researching silver identification, history, description, and/or values? Thanks! I will provide the entire list to anyone who helps me with this project. I have for sometime now.... downloaded digital images off the ebay auctions and have found a wealth of information on marks, false marks, styles and designs that would have required traveling all over the world to find. Not all the images are clear but I have found many variations on the marks and the added marks of retailers as well. I believe in this digital age we have the opportunity of sharing and learning so much more about metalwork and the silversmithing tradition that draws us to collect, or in my case, to make items of beauty in this lustrous metal. For serious research, the Internet is still not as useful as a good library of silver books. Probably the best source for silver books is Spencer Marks, at www.spencermarks.com. They carry nearly all silver reference books that are currently in print, as well as limited stocks of important out-of-print books, and all at good prices. I check them out regularly to see what new books are available, and what hard-to-find classics they have uncovered. IP: Logged |

Hi Gail: As a seller on Ebay, I have found researching their closed auctions a wonderful way to get info on values. If you catch the closed auction fast enough, not only do you get what people were willing to pay for an item, you get the description AND a picture. It really has opened my eyes as to 'book value' and 'dollar value'. I suppose any online auction house would have the same features. In Ebay's chat room the question of 'what's it worth, what's its value?" comes up quite often. The questioners are usually told "It's worth whatever a buyer, on any given day, is willing to pay for it." Therfore, looking over what other people have sold their silver for gives me good ideas into the 'value' of what I have. Deb IP: Logged |

I have found the Midwesterling website www.silverwarehouse.com to be a great source opf information. They have a very large inventory which is priced, often include photos of the pattern and have tried to give a very complete listing of pattrerns and makers available. Second best is Antique Cupboard www.antiquecupboard.com IP: Logged |

Thank you all for your help in compiling a list of sites and other helpful tips. I used most of the info passed on to me in both my list and in my lecture. I also commented on the helpfulness of this Forum. Thanks again! I will send all who helped the complete list in the next few days. IP: Logged |
