I have an Sterling over porcelain 9" vase in high relief w/a child picking grapes. I think it is French. The mark on the bottom looks like a scrip "F" with a w hanging from the bottom of the post of the "F". Does anyone know the maker or where I can look this up. Thanks k. kirby IP: Logged |

First we need to know where the mark is located; on the silver or on the porcelain? In silver overlay, the porcelain maker would have subcontracted the overlay work to a silver company. If there is a mark on the silver, it is the mark of the silver company, not the porcelain factory. American silver manufacturers did overlay work on a variety of ceramics, including French limoges. There is a possibility that the porcelain is French, but the overlay American. Look for marks on both, and let us know what you find! Brent IP: Logged |

Thank you for the information. The porcelain is only visable viewing the vase from the top and looking inside. The porcelain is cream in color. The mark is on the bottom of the vase. It is barely visable. Besides the mark "F" with a possible "W" hanging from the stem - there is a stamp "Sterling". Also, some kind of number. I think if it were French, I would see a French hallmark - wouldn't I? Thanks Marlene IP: Logged |

Thank you for the additional information. The STERLING stamp certainly increases the chances of it being American work. You are correct, overlay done in France would have a French standard mark, not the word STERLING. As I mentioned before, the porcelain may well be French, but the silver overlay isn't. As to who did the overlay, you say the mark looks like a script F with a W on the bottom. Does it look anything like the english Pound sign, which is basically a cursive capital L with a horizontal dash across the middle? If it does, then it is the trademark of the LaPierre company of Newark, NJ, who did a lot of sterling overlay work. IP: Logged |

PS The number is 162 - Also, I found today with a 10X magifier on the bottom- out edge - a word/name in script. I cannot read. Seems to end in tum - has about 4 other letters in front ------tum. Marlene IP: Logged |

Well, it isn't LaPierre. Unfortunately, I can't place the mark you drew. Maybe someone else will have better luck. On looking at the piece, it seems to be of European taste. It might be modern continental work, with the STERLING added to satisfy Americans. The ____tum word might be Argentum, the Latin word for silver, which would also point towards a continental origin.
