Today my husband returned from a short trip with a gift. It was a lovely sugar spoon with the Waltrous hallmark. I immediately set out to discover the name of the pattern. When I checked Dolan's "American Sterling Silver Flatware 1880's to 1990's, An Identification & Value Guide" I found the pattern listed under the International Silver Co. (not surprising since Waltrous was one of the early silver manufacturers that joined together to form the International Silver Company) as "Abbottsford" introduced in 1907. When I checked Hagan's "Sterling Flatware, Revised Second Edition", I found that she had also listed the design under the International Silver Company and identified my pattern as "Althea" introduced in 1910. In trying to sort this out I noted that the pattern Dolan identified as "Althea" is the pattern Hagan identified as "Abbottsford". Does anyone know who is correct? IP: Logged |

In our files, we do not have any original manufacturer documentation on either pattern. Nevertheless, We believe that it is a paste up error in Dolan. The photo that they identify as Abbotsford is Althea and vice versa. Hagen, Turner and JCK also support this. So it sounds like your pattern is Althea. BTW, If anyone has original manufacturer documentation that supports this we would love to see a copy. IP: Logged |
