Hello, I have an antique match case(aka match safe) and I can not identify the mark. It is Art Nouveau and has the mark "sterling 197". I am trying to find out what the 197 means? Thank you to anyone who can help! Here is a picture
I just replied and made statements about the hinging mechanism. From some reason the pictures I submitted yesterday have been edited and the the hinge part is now not shown. Sorry [This message has been edited by lincnkel (edited 04-01-2001).] IP: Logged |

No doubt the numbers refer to a style nubering system... or an object numbering system.... Many companies would identify their production with these numbers. without an image to look at there is no way I could even hope to help you identify the maker of your match safe. IP: Logged |

The 197 unfortunately does not provide any clue as to the manufacturer of the matchsafe. Any other marks, perhaps on the other side of the lip? This matchsafe is stylistically consistent with the 1890's. IP: Logged |

There are no other marks anywhere on the match safe. I can tell you the time frame is consistent with other items at the auction this came from. It weighs almost 1 ounce. other than that I have no idea who made this. The hinge mechanism may be of some indication. If you look at the picture you can see that it is a rod all the way down and a piece of metal attached to the lid that has a u cut into it so it slides just right down the rod. Very interesting method. ------------------ IP: Logged |

From about 1877 to 1910-20 nearly every silver manufacturer with a novelty line made pocket match safes. Your match safe is similar in design to the match safes offered by Solomon Bros. & Gross, The Sterling House. This add is from Jeweler's Circular November 1899. IP: Logged |
