I inherited a Gump's sterling tray which has been used for holding liquor bottles. It has rings in the bottom which will not polish out. Please advise if possible to remove these blemishes = mahalo nui! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Most wines and many liquors contain sulfites. Sulfites are a salt or an ester of a solution of sulfur dioxide in water, H2SO3. This is used as a preservative in wine. Since sulfur causes silver to tarnish .... Are the rings black tarnish or are they "pittings" in the silver? IP: Logged |

The rings do not appear to be pittings *or* black tarnish, but are like a discoloration - almost like a shadow or a negative image. I have tried several different polishes recommended by this site and nothing works. I am to the point of wondering whether I should have the ivory handles taken off and have it plated to cover the rings. . . . .thank you for your reply. Hoku Paoa IP: Logged |

Drinks trays are often laquered or given some other protective coating -- does the rest of the surface tarnish as silver normally does? IP: Logged |

I don't think this tray was originally meant to be a drinks tray. It is about 1.5-inches deep or so and looks like it may have originally had a glass liner for serving food. Here it is: [gone from the internet] IP: Logged |

I does look like it was originally intended as a casserole server; still likely it has had some kind of treatment done to protect the surface. Can you clean the surface were the rings aren't? IP: Logged |
